Is dating in Medellín safe?

Mostly yes. Thousands of foreigners meet Colombian women every month and nothing goes wrong. The cases that do go wrong follow a pattern, and it is worth knowing before you arrange to meet anyone.

What happens

The shape is almost always the same. They match on an app. The conversation moves fast. She suggests his apartment or hotel rather than somewhere public. He is drugged and robbed.

Scopolamine is the substance usually named. Victims describe losing several hours and waking up with their phone, cards and cash gone. The US Embassy has issued warnings specifically about dating apps, and some cases have ended in deaths.

The common thread

In every serious case the man had no way of knowing who he was actually talking to. A profile is photos and a name. Photos can be taken from anyone. A name costs nothing.

Most apps do not check. Verifying hundreds of millions of accounts worldwide is not something they are set up to do.

What reduces the risk

• Meet in public the first time, somewhere you chose, in daylight.
• Video call before you meet. Someone using stolen photos will refuse.
• Do not let anyone carry or pour your drink.
• Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.
• Be wary of urgency. Pressure to meet tonight, at her place, is the pattern.

Why verification matters

People assume they will notice when something is wrong. The men this happened to assumed the same. The conversations read normally and the photos looked real.

Checking identity at signup removes the question. If every woman on a site has passed a live face scan matched against her own photos, the profile in front of you is a real person whose face matches her pictures. That does not make anyone trustworthy and it does not replace meeting in public. It closes the gap the serious cases all went through.
